Why avoid depending on the customer’s Internet connection?
On many industrial sites, the production network is deliberately isolated or heavily filtered. Requesting a port opening, firewall rule or VPN access may require involvement from the IT department, a security review and sometimes several days of waiting.
On a smaller site, the opposite problem may arise: nobody knows exactly how the router is configured. For an occasional intervention, dealing with this dependency can take longer than the diagnosis itself. An independent link separates the maintenance requirement from the customer’s Internet infrastructure.
The principle: use an independent communication path
A 4G/LTE cellular solution provides a separate communication path. The technician connects the equipment or local maintenance network to the gateway, which then uses its own mobile connection to reach the remote service.
This has two advantages: the customer’s Internet router does not need to be modified, and remote access does not depend on the site’s fixed Internet connection. This approach is particularly suitable for PLCs, HMIs, gateways, industrial PCs and technical equipment accessible over Ethernet.
What to check before the intervention
Independence from the Internet does not remove the need to prepare the local network. You must know, or be able to find, the equipment’s IP address and make sure the maintenance gateway can communicate with it. Sufficient mobile coverage is also required at the site.
Remote access must also remain controlled: authentication, encryption, a limited session duration and closing the link after the intervention are essential.
How RescueLAN meets this requirement
RescueLAN was designed for this scenario. The gateway uses its own 4G/LTE connectivity and establishes remote access only when an intervention is required. It does not need the customer’s Internet connection and does not require a permanently open port on the customer’s router.
The goal is simple: arrive on site, connect RescueLAN to the equipment network and maintain a remote access path without redesigning the customer’s network infrastructure.
